Just a quick idea I am trying to flesh out.
I would like to run a living campaign here at Meta. In doing so I would like to include as many people that would like to play. I think we would see both private and store ran games with quarterly(?) events that brings together the RPG community as a whole. So this is what I need to know from the community of people that would like to play (I'll give my thoughts at the end): 1) What system should we use? 2) What setting should it be? 3) Would you be willing to run or play in such a campaign? A few quick questions and when we progress from here I'll start to narrow down to the specifics. Here is how I would respond to the above...(remember this is just my opinions and ideas, nothing set in stone) 1) Savage Worlds...Easy to run, teach (important because I want new players to be involved), and play. Plus we can fit ANYTHING into it with minimal work. 2) I would love to run a Matrix game, but the more I think of it, a Living Project Mayhem (Fight Club) would be awesome. It would allow each group to play a club in a different city and allow character to float from game to game as wanted or heeded. I have a lot of ideas for this but don't want to give up too much in case I run this for a group of my own. 3) I would like to to both. This is where having multiple groups would be advantageous. I could run a group and play in another. Anyway, those are my thoughts...please chime in and let me know what you think. Carl -------------------- |

I'm in. Project Mayhem sounds like it could be fantastic. I haven't done very much Savage Worlds but it seems like it could go well. Same thing with World of Darkness; have different groups set up in the same city from all the different supernatural creatures (i.e. vampires, werewolves, mages, etc). D&D could also work, as always.
Whatever we decide to go with I'll help out with, and I'll talk to you Carl about some ideas. -------------------- I realized how old this crap was. People should start giving me new quotes...

A living campaign is where you take a bunch of separate groups, running in the same world and effecting the overall story.
Savage Worlds is a RPG system that does not have a setting. (D&D is a fantasy setting, Mutants and Masterminds a superhero setting, etc). The system is real easy to learn and the main book is the best deal in roleplaying...only $9.99. I like the system because the rules are so easy to incorporate into anything you want to play. In fact there is a whole on-line community that converts popular settings and stories into Savage Worlds compatible games. -------------------- |

This could be interesting, depending on how much involvement there is from the community at large. I'd be interested in taking part, though in what capacity would depend on what the game ends up being (IE, I'd play in a Matrix or Project Mayhem game, but I probably wouldn't run either of them, whereas I might be willing to run World of Darkness or D&D).

I am in! I would be willing to run any of it, except the WoD (still a little sketchy on it).
I like the idea of the Matrix, but I do like the idea of Project Mayhem. So I am neutral on the setting. As for system I am all for Savage Worlds as it is easy to adapt and the core book isn't pricey at all. -------------------- Be careful Jeffrey, its snowing out there and watch out for Carl is in the snowbank.

I think from talking to people here around the store, we could easily get 3-4 groups going. With the way I envision the game, groups could play anywhere from once a week to once a month. When we get a group of GMs that are definite and we agree on a setting, we can hash out the details. I want to make this something that anyone can get into without feeling overwhelemed by what is going on in the story. I also would like a nice gradual progression of character experience. Most living campaigns that I have researched can be fairly rigid with the story. I would like to have our where we set out 1-3 major plots per month. The gm can use at least one of those(more if they want), and then fill in however they like. After the month is finished, they report in, the GMs meet, and then come up with a set of plot points for the next month. The GMs will also work on the overall meta-plot and the more well known and active NPCs.

My final vote for system is Savage Worlds. The book is cheap, the system is simple and adaptive, and it can easily be played with a more "heroic style" if you want.
Go ahead and list me as a GM. Tell me the time and day that I need to show up for a GM meeting and I'll be there. Just to get potential players thinking, I'll likely be running a week-day game starting between 5 and 6. -------------------- "Everyone has cleave for the purpose of killing children and the elderly." --Matt Landis

OK I think we have decided on a Matrix campaign. I will be running my first session on Dec. 4th, but I don't envision the actual campaign starting until after the first of the year. I will be helping people make characters next Thursday (Nov 13th) and when ever people want to come in and give it a go.
We need to have a GM meeting soon, so if you are interested in running a game, please let me know so we can schedule a time. I would like to have 4-6 people per GM and each group would be part of ship's crew. Players would also be able to "float" from game to game if the GM is running a public game. Again, more details to come. Let me know if you have any questions. -------------------- |

Count me in as a GM. I'll be running my first game on December 6th as part of One-Shotter Day.
